MATT MALTESE NIGHTCLUB LOVE

Matt Maltese channels the anti-club anti-hero in new single ‘Nightclub Love’, which comes with the London songwriter's own description - “If you enjoy romance and going to the disco, I hope you’ll enjoy this.” The track certainly does beckon a more chivalrous, romantic era, or at least where the illusion of such a society was maintained, and it’s characters like Maltese and producer Alex Burey who find themselves at odds with the go-to nocturnal destinations and strange mating rituals of the creeps and the intoxicated. Really, are the cynical any better for taking part with their ironic grins? It’s a contradiction that Maltese is all too aware of as we are in those honest, narrative lyrics and unaffected baritone. The story itself contrasts against the soft, retro-isms of brushed percussion, amorous piano scales, and siren-esque backing vocals. You can almost imagine Matt Maltese appearing through a wooden-boxed television screen, fresh with static, in technicolor and holding a tiny silver microphone as he sings “I want you and that’s the way it is, I’ve got to stop being ironic, I want you and that’s the way it is, I’m going to be real straight about it.” - Hannah Thacker
